BIG EVENTS AND BIG PIVOTS HIGHLIGHT YEAR OF GOOD

Our 2020 fiscal year started out with big plans and big initiatives to drive positive change across metro Atlanta, but then a global pandemic struck and shifted focus, calling on our community to rise up - and that’s exactly what they did.

For more than 30 years, Hands On Atlanta has been mobilizing Atlantans to tackle our city’s most pressing needs. But in full transparency, I never imagined a year like 2020. Hands On Atlanta has had a front-row seat to the global pandemic, divisive election, growing Black Lives Matter movement, staggering nationwide unemployment, and unprecedented educational slide. We’ve seen the needs in our community skyrocket while at the same time, we’ve seen so many of our nonprofit partners shut their doors. Suffice it to say, the challenges facing Atlanta have never seemed greater or more complex.

But if I squint really hard, I can see a silver lining. In the wake of this crisis, Atlantans have found it impossible to sit on the sidelines. From August 2019 through July 2020, 22,000 people served 150,000 hours distributing food, tutoring students, working in urban gardens, hosting civic dialogues, volunteering virtually and so much more…all to help achieve our vision of making Atlanta the most civically engaged and equitable community in the world.

So to Atlanta, I say THANK YOU! More specially, thanks to each and every volunteer, nonprofit, school, business, foundation, or individual who answered the call and helped us tackle the city’s most pressing needs. This work wouldn’t be possible without the hardest working team in Atlanta – high five to our staff, Board of Directors, Civic Fellows and AmeriCorps members, who work every day to make Atlanta better.

COVID-19 RELIEF

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, every one of our nonprofit partners either closed or stopped their volunteer programs, with exception to our “essential” partners fighting food insecurity. We added 4 digital partners and promoted 25 virtual projects and rallied the corporate, education and nonprofit sectors together (raising over $550,000 and mobilizing thousands of volunteers) to get families the food they needed during the closing of schools and throughout the summer break.

ATLANTA’S FOOD FIGHT

In partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Atlanta Public Schools and our community of nonprofit partners, we rallied together to fight food insecurity across metro Atlanta.

Hands On Atlanta Week

Look back at the first ever Hands On Atlanta Week (Oct. 3-10, 2019), where we engaged more than 10,000 people over 30,000 hours to do something good!

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Our education programs are at the core of our work to tackle one of Atlanta’s greatest needs, with what we call our “wrap around” services. In total, Hands On Atlanta volunteers and our AmeriCorps members supported 4,731 students through our AmeriCorps and Discovery programs, and distributed 16,000 meals through our Meals for Kids program!

AMERICORPS

With Georgia’s second largest AmeriCorps cohort, 31 members served over 45,000 hours in 10 Title 1 schools, supporting K-5 students with with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) coaching, tutoring and more!

1,933 volunteers served close to 7,000 hours with 1,209 students across 11 elementary schools, with 100% of parents surveyed being highly satisfied.

DISCOVERY AFTER SCHOOL

In partnership with the City of Atlanta, we supported over 90 K-5 students in our after school program at 2 Centers of Hope locations across the city.

TALK WITH ME BABY @ WORK

Our team hosted 28 Talk With Me Baby at Work sessions, totaling 250 hours teaching parents and/or caregivers how to actively read to their children.

DAY OF SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

MLK DAY SUNDAY SUPPER + DAY OF SERVICE

The 2020 edition of the King holiday kicked off with 150 changemakers discussing social just issues and celebrating women’s rights at the Sunday Supper and concluded with over 3,000 volunteers, serving close to 10,000 hours at 20 projects across metro Atlanta.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS

The year started strong for our Community Engagement Programs, seeing new partnerships, a record size cohort of Civic Fellows, and more! With the onset of Covid-19, focus changed to fighting food insecurity and engaging volunteers virtually.

NONPROFIT SERVICES

In FY20, we partnered with 100 nonprofits (70% renewed from FY19) across metro Atlanta, hosting 5,662 projects on our opportunity calendar.

CIVIC LEADERSHIP

We welcomed 29 Civic Fellows in our FY20 Civic Leadership Program - our largest class ever. Together, they hosted 200 projects engaging 3200 volunteers in 10,000 hours!

We supported 8 Atlanta Community Food Bank partner agencies, engaging 800+ volunteers, moving 1.2M+ meals - launching our Food Assistance Programs.

9-11 DAY OF SERVICE

On Sept. 11, 2019, 1200 volunteers came together at the College Football Hall of Fame to pack over 300,000 meals for the Atlanta Community Food Bank!
