Fiscal Year 2021 Annual Report

TACKLING ATL’S MOST PRESSING NEEDS

In the face of the pandemic, Hands On Atlanta engaged over 14,000 people to serve 137,000 hours with 140 partners across metro Atlanta.

President + CEO, Hands On Atlanta

Dear Atlanta

Service is at the heart of everything we do at Hands On Atlanta. It centers us as we live through the global pandemic, economic turmoil and calls for racial justice – as well as the uncertainty of what might come next. Though I can’t be confident in what the future holds, I can be resolved in our mission: to mobilize the Atlanta community to tackle our city’s most pressing needs.

The pandemic has served to highlight the pre-existing inequities that have challenged Atlanta for generations – from education and affordable housing to food insecurity and poverty.  As a result, more of us than ever before understand the chasm of disparities and the need for systems change. Though the times are uncertain, we remain rooted in our belief that Atlantans are the most powerful force for change in our community.  Individual actions, both big and small, have significant impact. And through these actions, we can tackle Atlanta’s most pressing needs.

This year’s annual report highlights the diversity of individual actions that have impacted our city. I invite you to learn more about our work, our partners and our stewardship of charitable funds. As we continue our journey to a more engaged and equitable community, we are honored that you have chosen to join us as a partner, supporter and friend.

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT

Hands On Atlanta Week

From Oct. 3-10, 2021, 5,000 Atlantans battled a global pandemic, racial, political and economic divide, hurricane season, and constant uncertainty to unite in Atlanta’s biggest week of service.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

In FY21, Hands On Atlanta provided direct and wraparound services to nearly 2,000 students (1,931 unduplicated) in Atlanta Public Schools, Fulton County Schools, and Cobb County Schools. Most of our programming shifted to a virtual setting, with the notable exceptions of our Disco pop-ups and Centers of Hope learning pod facilitation.

TUTORING + COACHING

38 Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps members entered virtual and in-person classrooms at 10 partner sites to provide coaching and tutoring to 387 K-8 students, completing 44,449 hours of service.

OUT-OF-SCHOOL LEARNING

Our virtual volunteers supported 98 students, serving over 700 hours across 6 elementary schools and 5 part-time staff served over 50 families at 2 City of Atlanta Parks & Recreation’s Centers of Hope.

FOOD ASSISTANCE

With an organization-wide emphasis on food insecurity, 1,500 meals were packed and distributed for families at 3 of our partner schools through our Meals4Kids program.

OUR EDUCATION PARTNERS

As an AmeriCorps member through Hands On Atlanta, I’m able to build strong relationships with parents, scholars and school administrators, I’m able to give back to the community and help close the educational gap that scholars have faced throughout the Covid pandemic.
— Rakya Burks, Social Emotional Learning Coach and 2 time AmeriCorps Member

At first, the [Covid-19] restrictions made it more challenging to volunteer and it interrupted the “habit” I had established. The Hands On Atlanta team kept me in the know on existing and emerging needs in Atlanta, so I was able to serve in a way that worked for me. In a time where many of us felt helpless with little control of the situation, serving provided an outlet and opportunity to put that energy into action.
