The
Honorable Andrew Young, former
ambassador to the United Nations,
civil rights activist and
businessman, will make two
appearances at the 14th
annual Hands On Atlanta Martin
Luther King, Jr. Service Summit on
Saturday, Jan. 13.
In an onstage interview
lasting approximately 45 minutes,
Young will share his memories from
the civil rights movement, as well
as insights on issues and
opportunities facing today’s
activists.
The interview will be conducted by
Tom Houck -
Author of the forthcoming book, "Driving Dr. King:
Chasing the Dream," Tom Houck served as Dr. King’s
aid and chauffer from 1966 until his assassination
in 1968. The talk will be the
concluding portion of the Service
Summit’s Freedom Rally event at
Ebenezer Baptist Church which begins
at 10 a.m. and finishes after the
Young interview by noon.
Young will also open a
panel discussion beginning at 12:30
p.m. on Saturday called “Dr. King’s
Unknown Ground Crew” featuring
special guests, many of whom worked
for the voter registration project
in 1965. The so-called SCOPE
project (SCLC Summer Community
Organization and Political
Education) resulted in the
registration of 49,000 primarily
black voters in the deep South.
This event takes place at Our Lady
of Lourdes Catholic Church in the
Martin Luther King Historic
District.
