Grassroots Activism: Those Who Came Before, And The
New Vanguard.
During the summer of
1965 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. assigned the late
Rev. Hosea L. Williams to lead an initiative to
register new voters in 120 counties in five southern
states. The SCLC Summer Community Organization and
Political Education (SCOPE) project volunteers,
predominantly white college students led by
African-American community activists. Together,
they registered more than 49,000 new black voters.
The
Voting Rights Act was first passed due in part to
the work of the Southern Christian Leadership
Conference. With the reauthorization of this
landmark legislation in 2006, it is fitting that we
reflect upon the contributions of these grassroots
volunteers to its successful passage. Join this
distinguished panel of activists as they share
personal remembrances and talk about why the
principle of one person, one vote remains relevant.
