The Discovery Program is a model educational initiative, which boosts
the aspirations and self-confidence of students through a
multi-faceted, volunteer-led program. The program strives to
convince children of the importance of education, to broaden
their horizons and to be a positive force in their lives. Through
their participation, volunteers see first-hand the challenges
facing schools and the needs of low-income communities and their
students. Two or more times a month, interactive tutoring
sessions are held in ten schools for students in Pre-Kindergarten-Fifth
grades.
The Program Structure:
Twice a month, on a Saturday
morning, tutoring sessions are held for students in grades
Pre-Kindergarten-Fifth. Two volunteer school captains supervise
the program at the school. School captains are responsible
for developing relationships with the school staff and managing
other volunteer leaders. In each grade two volunteer leaders
are trained to act as grade captains. Grade captain responsibilities
include providing the lesson plan for the tutorial session, engaging
volunteers and students in an activity that is both educational
and interesting. Ideally, a low student to volunteer ratio is
maintained.
Hands On Atlanta takes an unconventional approach by
allowing volunteers total flexibility in seeking
their own level of involvement. No experience is
needed for tutoring. Volunteers can make a
commitment to a particular grade or they can provide
assistance in a classroom with low volunteer
attendance. While the program offers an excellent
opportunity for the first time volunteer, the
project coordinators and grade captains work hard to
build a team of dedicated volunteers at their
school.
