Hands On Atlanta also manages the largest AmeriCorps program in the
Southeast with 145 members. Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps members serve as
teaching assistants, tutors, mentors and volunteer coordinators at 20
elementary schools in the Atlanta metro area. In conjunction with
hands-on volunteer projects, programs such as Citizen Academy and
TeamWorks provide volunteers with opportunities to share experiences and
learn more about problems facing the Atlanta community.
Volunteer Leadership
Volunteers play a large role in Hands On Atlanta's structure and
organizational direction. Each project listed in The Citizen is
coordinated by a volunteer Project Coordinator. Project Coordinators
serve as liaisons between Hands On Atlanta and the community partner
agencies. They recruit and communicate with volunteers and ensure the
success of the project. Volunteers also serve on committees to help
develop and coordinate Hands On Atlanta's special events and to assist
with public relations and fundraising efforts.
Hands On Atlanta History
Founded in 1989 by a small group of friends, Hands On Atlanta has
experienced phenomenal growth and is now Atlanta's premier volunteer
organization and a model for volunteer organizations across the nation.
Since 1989, Hands On Atlanta has grown from a budget of under $50,000
and an all-volunteer staff of less than 10 in 1989 to a $6.3 million
budget and a professional staff of 45. Over the years, Hands On Atlanta
volunteers have contributed more than 3 million volunteer hours to
programs that directly impact the Atlanta community.
