She actively volunteers with Grl Give, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta. In addition to volunteering she serves as the Vice President of the Sugarloaf Chapter of Grls ATL.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

I care the most about food insecurity. I have been a social worker for almost 20 years. Children not having enough food is something that we can easily tackle. It is really hard to focus on school or any other task if you are hungry. Food insecurity is something we can and must solve for our children and communities.

I’m committed to doing this work and together we can continue doing good!!! If I can be of assistance of help out please let me know! Separate we can do somethings but together we can do ALL things!!
— Nastassja Cockrell

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

I love volunteering with Grls Give. It’s the outreach component of my social club Grls ATL. We love getting together and serving the people. I volunteer with them because we share the same passion and heart to help others.

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Volunteering has truly given my life purpose. I live by the motto blessed to be a blessing. If God has helped me then it’s my duty to bless someone else.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

I have learned project management skills and also communication skills.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

This year at Parklane, I organized a spaghetti lunch. The kids were so grateful and there was no leftovers. The next week one of the kids asked if I could bring some fried chicken. I thought it was so funny.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

I absolutely love Atlanta. There is no place like Atlanta. I love the festivals, the culture, and the food. My favorite thing to do is go to brunch. There is nothing like a good brunch.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

My advice would be to be consistent and start where you can. Most people think that they don’t have enough time to volunteer but even just once a month can be impactful.

Volunteering in April? Share where, when and if others can join you or how they can get involved.

I’ll be at Parklane and also Atlanta Unbound Academy on April 27 for their Stomp the Yard event. Definitely go to GrlsGive.org to check is out and our April/May events.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

Atlanta is an amazing city, but it also faces some challenges that I care deeply about. One of the most important is ensuring all children have access to high-quality early childhood education. A strong foundation in these early years sets kids up for success in school and life. Unfortunately, not all Atlanta children have this opportunity, and that can lead to achievement gaps later on. These gaps can then become a cycle of poverty, something we all want to break. Another pressing need is affordable living. The cost of living in Atlanta, especially housing, is rising much faster than wages for many residents. This makes it hard for families, young professionals, and even seniors to find safe and stable places to live. When housing costs are too high, it puts a strain on everyone's resources, increases homelessness, and creates a feeling of instability in our communities. Finally, drug abuse is a serious problem in Atlanta, with opioids and other substances having a devastating impact on individuals, families, and entire neighborhoods. It leads to crime, health problems, and lost productivity. To address this issue, we need a multi-pronged approach that includes prevention programs, effective treatment options, and strong support systems for recovery. These are just a few of the areas I'm passionate about seeing progress in Atlanta. Each of these issues has a ripple effect, impacting the overall well-being of our city's residents. By working together, we can create a brighter future for everyone in Atlanta.

I’m currently volunteering with Discovery, an Atlanta-based program that empowers K-5 students in Title 1 schools. We run engaging enrichment sessions on alternate Saturdays, focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), social-emotional learning (SEL), and health and wellness activities. It’s a fun and rewarding experience for the kids, as they get to learn new things, connect with their peers, and unleash their creativity. We even provide them with healthy snacks to keep them fueled up throughout the day!

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

What I truly enjoy about volunteering with Hands On Atlanta is the authentic leadership and the incredible ripple effect our work has on the community. The leaders are passionate individuals who are genuinely invested in the cause, not just checking boxes. They inspire us to bring our own ideas to the table and empower us to make a real difference. Secondly, the organization provides an amazing platform to get involved and network. There are so many diverse opportunities to contribute, whether it's getting involved in civic engagement, working on environmental conditions, or leading the Discovery program. It allows you to connect with like-minded people from all walks of life, all working towards a common goal. The network you build can be incredibly valuable, both personally and professionally. But most importantly, I volunteer with Hands on Atlanta because of the tangible impact we have. Seeing the positive change we create is incredibly rewarding. It motivates me to keep coming back and give my all, knowing that our efforts are truly making a difference in people's lives. Overall, volunteering with HOA is an enriching experience that allows me to learn, grow, and contribute to something larger than myself.

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Volunteering has been a game-changer for me, both personally and professionally. It's given my life a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment that extends far beyond the daily grind. On a personal level, volunteering connects me to my community in a meaningful way. Seeing the positive impact I can have on others, even in small ways, is incredibly rewarding. It's fostered a sense of compassion and understanding that I carry with me in all aspects of my life. Professionally, volunteering has been a fantastic way to develop new skills and step outside my comfort zone. It's allowed me to lead projects, hone my communication abilities, and learn from inspiring individuals. These experiences have boosted my confidence and made me a more well-rounded professional. Overall, volunteering has been an enriching experience that's allowed me to grow as a person and contribute to something larger than myself. It's a fantastic way to meet like-minded individuals, develop valuable skills, and create a positive impact on the world around you.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

Leading the Discover Child Enrichment program has been an enriching journey of self-discovery and skill development. The ability to delegate has been an essential skill, throughout this process I've learned to assess a volunteer's skills and interests, assigning tasks that challenge them and allow them to shine. This not only lightens my workload but also keeps volunteers engaged and feeling valued. The needs of our young participants are constantly evolving, and so must the program. I actively seek feedback from volunteers, parents, and the children themselves to identify areas for improvement. Finally, working with children requires adaptability! As a former educator, I’ve become very proficient at thinking on my feet and adjusting activities or schedules as needed to ensure a positive and enriching experience for everyone. Beyond these specific skills, volunteering has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of Atlanta's youth.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

Seeing the enjoyment on the faces of the children, volunteers and parents is what really motivated me. You’re getting a chance to get on-the-spot feedback and to know that so many people had so much appreciation and positivity towards the program is beautiful. In addition to that having an opportunity to bond, build relationships, encourage, and give knowledge is amazing.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

There is no place like “the city”, Atlanta is a place in which you can do or be anything, it is surrounded by opportunity if you go out and find it. I enjoy all things Atlanta from Piedmont Park, EAV, urban hiking through Midtown, Music Festivals, Live Music on patios, the Beltline, Waffle House, and of course the weather. As one of the most populated African American cities in the US with a rich civil rights history, it's incredibly inspiring to see so many successful Black leaders and entrepreneurs shaping the future, in addition to several other cultures and communities co-existing. The "City" is truly special and unique.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

In my experience, the biggest hurdle to volunteering is often ourselves! We can get caught up in waiting for the "perfect" opportunity, the "right" teammates, or that elusive "free Saturday." My advice? Don't wait! Pull up – there are so many causes that need your help. Even a few hours a week can make a real difference. Personally, volunteering has been incredibly rewarding. It connects you to a community of passionate people, gives you a chance to learn new skills, and provides a deep sense of fulfillment knowing you're making a positive impact. It's a win-win! So, if you're thinking about volunteering, don't overthink it. Just start exploring – there are tons of online resources that can help you find an opportunity that aligns with your interests. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Volunteering in April? Share where, when and if others can join you or how they can get involved.

You can find me May 7th at the COX Communications campus (6205-B Peachtree Dunwoody Rd, Atlanta, GA 30328) working with 250 volunteers packing up STEAM Kit Packs, reach out to me anytime and I’m sure I can connect you with an opportunity to get involved.

Please list anything else you think our community should know about you, your volunteer service, or your commitment to Do Something Good!

In addition to my passion for volunteering with HOA, I have several ideas to expand Atlanta's social impact landscape! Here are three initiatives I'm particularly excited about, and where I'd love your assistance: Yoga in Schools: Imagine dispatching certified yoga teachers to Title 1 schools, promoting mindfulness and stress reduction for students. Research shows yoga can improve focus, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. Partnering with schools and yoga studios could make this a reality, and I'd love to collaborate on building this program. Tech & Entrepreneurial Saturdays: Equipping students with the skills to thrive in the digital age is crucial. A Saturday enrichment program focusing on tech basics, coding fundamentals, and even fostering an entrepreneurial mindset would be a game-changer. This could involve recruiting volunteers with tech expertise to create engaging workshops, and it would be fantastic to have your support in getting this off the ground. Pay-What-You-Can Consulting: Many small businesses in Atlanta lack access to affordable consulting services. My aim is to connect them with marketing, finance, or operations professionals who can offer guidance. This initiative could leverage the expertise within our community to empower local businesses. These are just a few ideas, and I'm always brainstorming ways to make Atlanta a more vibrant and equitable city. My commitment to "Do Something Good" is unwavering, and I believe in the power of collaboration. If any of these initiatives resonate with you, or if you have ideas of your own, let's connect and see what kind of positive impact we can make together!

Meet Crystal Mccorkle, a young professional dedicated to empowering others and serving her community. She is a creative, zealous, and fun-loving volunteer, a fellow in our Civic Leadership Program, and a Client Service Consultant. (Volunteer with Girl Scouts here)

Get to know Crystal and how her volunteering journey has impacted her path forward!

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

As a civic leader with a servant heart, it can be difficult to identify what I care mostly about. However, after working side by side with Girl Scouts for the past 8 months, I have a renewed passion for children (specifically girls) and their well-being, confidence, and development of their character.

More than anything, I’m a community advocate with a passion for connecting resources with opportunity. My intent and dedication is unwavering.
— Crystal Mccorkle

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

I have absolutely LOVED volunteering with Girl Scouts. The many opportunities and programs they make available for girls to develop is amazing. It not only provides different ways for our community daughters to grow and learn, but it provides variety for volunteers. The Girl Scouts staff also makes volunteering easy by keeping activities so organized!

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

I have volunteered for as long as I can remember. Volunteering has helped me in so many ways, from conquering personal goals of pursuing more meaningful and deeper community engagement to professional goals of expanding my network and advocating for change in the fintech industry.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

My current goal is to hone my storytelling and public speaking skills. Volunteering has shown me that my story is unique and telling it is important. It has given me several opportunities to practice and hone these skills. It’s certainly the gift that keeps on giving.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

Annually, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta has an event called Cookie Rally. This event is the one stop shop for girl scouts to come and gain all the knowledge and hone their skills ahead of cookie selling season. Well, I was very nervous to volunteer. The fear of misguiding a young girl was almost paralyzing. However, I was committed to the cause and decided to do it anyway. That entire experience was so rewarding. Seeing the girls range from being extremely nervous to super confident, and everything in between, it allowed me to get out of my own way and focus on them. By the end of it, I was role playing different costumes types with the girls! LOL

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

I’m a GA native - from Columbus - Atlanta has always been “the big city”. When I graduated college (shoutout to THE Fort Valley State University), I couldn’t wait to move to Atlanta. I’ve been able to call Atlanta home for over 15 years and I love it! The food scene to the music scene keeps my friends and I entertained and busy.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

Just do it! Don’t over think it…just do it! Find something or an organization that piques your interest and start there. Hands on Atlanta is a terrific resource to help.

This year he joined the Hands On Atlanta Civic Leadership Program and has served with our Discovery program to gain the tools and resources needed to join a nonprofit board or committee.

Get to know Malan and how his volunteering journey is giving back to the community and himself.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

There is rampant education inequality across Atlanta public schools. In 2023, only 37% of Atlanta students tested proficient in reading according to Equity in Education. Specifically in South Atlanta, that number is as low as 12%. A proper education provides people with essential skills necessary to succeed, whereas the absence of a proper education further perpetuates issues such as homelessness and food disparity.

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

My favorite thing about volunteering with the Hands On Atlanta Discovery Program is having the ability to see first hand the positive effect it has on the students. The program provides a fun environment for children to explore STEM subjects along with social and emotional learning, growing them both intellectually as well as socially. The children also bonded with many of our volunteer groups from local universities and businesses, allowing the children to see that these successful individuals are just like them.

Volunteering has opened up many learning opportunities for me across the non-profit landscape and beyond. I have lead projects, lead volunteers and fundraised all while becoming more aware of the challenges facing Atlanta and opportunities where I can better serve my community.”
— Malan Hess

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Becoming a volunteer has allowed me to feel included in something much greater than myself and has given me a great sense of purpose. The skills I have acquired from leading volunteer projects have improved my personal and professional endeavors as well.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

Volunteering has opened up many learning opportunities for me across the non-profit landscape and beyond. I have lead projects, lead volunteers and fundraised all while becoming more aware of the challenges facing Atlanta and opportunities where I can better serve my community.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

Volunteering has connected me with so many incredible and compassionate people across Atlanta that I never would have met otherwise. These people have inspired me to not only improve upon my community but to also improve upon myself.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

I love the community and culture of Atlanta. Although metro Atlanta is vast, it is made up of distinct neighborhoods that each have their own personality. There is truly something for everyone in Atlanta and these tight knit neighborhoods help make the big city feel like a small community. Some of my favorite activities include walking along the beltline around Inman and Ponce or biking around the trails at Piedmont Park.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

To start out my advice would be to search for volunteer opportunities in the area and pick whichever one you are most comfortable with. There are so many opportunities available that anyone can find one that fits their schedule and personality. Once you become more accustomed to volunteering I would say to begin signing up for opportunities that are beyond your comfort zone. From there you may find an area that you become truly passionate about.

Volunteering has connected me with so many incredible and compassionate people across Atlanta that I never would have met otherwise.”
— Malan Hess

Volunteering in April? Share where, when and if others can join you or how they can get involved.

Sadly we just had our celebration for the end of the Discovery Program. One opportunity I can recommend is the food drive at Antioch Urban Ministries. They have some openings this month and need help in the mornings/ afternoons. Also New Life Community Alliance is a great place to volunteer around the Decatur area and they offer many different ways to get involved. Both of these are available to sign up for on the Hands on Atlanta's Website.

Please list anything else you think our community should know about you, your volunteer service, or your commitment to Do Something Good!

My next civic engagement goal is to become a member of a nonprofit board or committee where I can contribute to promoting positive change from a broader perspective.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

Some of the most impactful needs that I care about most revolve around basic human necessities like access to clean water, food security, healthcare - access to care, education, and shelter. These needs are crucial for individuals and communities to thrive and reach their full potential. I care about these pressing needs because addressing these fundamental needs can lead to significant improvements in people's quality of life, reduce inequalities, and foster sustainable development. Additionally, meeting these needs can contribute to building more resilient and inclusive societies. Having access to basic human necessities help shape the everyday life of people.

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

What I love most about Hands On Atlanta, including Civic Leadership program I am in, is that there is always something to "Do Something Good" and volunteer opportunities are just a click away. With this organization you can see what impact Hands On Atlanta has on the community and the work speaks for itself. I've met so many awesome people along the way and we all share a common interest of servicing our community. Hands On Atlanta is home where I can add my value for civic engagement in the community.

Building relationships with fellow volunteers and the people I’m serving has led to new opportunities and friendships.”
— Melodee Lovett

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Volunteering has greatly impacted my personal/professional life. Sharing stories and even bringing others along to do something great in the community has been done through just by leading by example. Building relationships with fellow volunteers and the people I'm serving has led to new opportunities and friendships. Through volunteering it has increased my fulfillment and I know my purpose is to serve others and give back. I'm a Pre-Nursing Student and I have a passion for helping others, with volunteering it has opened my eyes to see that my calling aligns with my purpose to serve others and lend a helping hand.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

Throughout my volunteering experience, it has broadened my perspective and exposed me to new experiences and introduced me to great people! I've found that I'm open for all lines of volunteer work whether it be food insecurity, environmental conservation or working with students through the Hands On Atlanta Discovery program. It's always work that needs to be done and it's something good that comes out of each task. I've learned that I could fit in anywhere to improve the dynamic of society. Even small acts of kindness can make a big difference.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

One of my most memorable highlights was completing a volunteer session at Scott Elementary School and being able to actually see the progress with the children working with them two Saturdays out of the month. The students would tell me "I love Saturday school; I wish it could be forever!”

My confirmation was when one of the parents of the students text the Coordinator of the Discovery Program to express her daughter's excitement for Saturday school and she even had her siblings come and join sessions they enjoyed as well. That made my heart smile because knowing that I can make an impact in their life just by showing up and engaging with the is heartwarming. I believe that the children are the future and instilling greatness in them is important.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

Originally from Decatur, GA, Atlanta is my second home where I attend college and many of my volunteer sessions are in Atlanta. Attending Georgia State University right in the heart of the city exposed me to the greatness of Atlanta. Some of my favorite things to do in the city is volunteer at different events and attend many concerts and basketball games at State Farm Arena to see my favorite musicians live. My roots are in Atlanta my grandmother is a retired LPN opened up the Burn Unit at THEE Grady Memorial Hospital, and my grandfather is a retired Atlanta Lieutenant Sheriff.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

As a start to volunteering understand your why, core values and what you bring to the table look for opportunities where you can add value. Choose something you're passionate about whether it's food insecurity, environmental conservation, animal welfare, education, or helping the homeless - find a cause that resonates with you. Look for volunteer organizations that align with your interests and availability to build your civic brand.

Through volunteering, I not only make a tangible impact but also inspire others to join in creating a brighter, more compassionate world. I enjoy getting out and being the change I want to see.”
— Melodee Lovett

Please list anything else you think our community should know about you, your volunteer service, or your commitment to Do Something Good!

My passion for service is like a guiding light, illuminating the path toward making a positive difference in the lives of others and in my community. It's a driving force that fuels my desire to give back, to contribute, and to be of service which resonate deeply in me. Through volunteering, I not only make a tangible impact but also inspire others to join in creating a brighter, more compassionate world. I enjoy getting out and being the change I want to see.

I live by this quote “Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, and how you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your trademark ~Jay Danzie.

Which Nonprofit Organization(s) do you volunteer with?

Hands on Atlanta: Discovery program as well as multiple volunteer opportunities within Hands on Atlanta, Dreams come international foundation and Urban League of Atlanta YP.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

When I think of pressing needs I care the most about in Atlanta I would have to say, I’m deeply concerned about ensuring everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home, along with access to food. No one should have to worry where they’ll sleep at night, or where their next meal is coming from. This is why I want to be a part of the solution!

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

Hands On Atlanta is my go-to resource for volunteering! Their vast network of opportunities makes it effortless to find a cause that aligns with my interests. Plus, participating in the Civic Leadership Program and volunteering in their Discovery program has been incredibly rewarding. It's pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and make a real difference in the lives of children.

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Volunteering has been a transformative experience, enriching both my personal and professional life. It's connected me with a passionate community of individuals driven to make a positive change. This shared purpose has instilled a deep sense of fulfillment, and it's allowed me to discover a different facet of leadership that translates directly into my professional work. Fueled by this experience, I'm now driven to create opportunities for myself and others to serve the community and make an even greater impact.

Volunteering has definitely honed my leadership skills. While I’ve always considered myself a leader, working with Hands On Atlanta’s Civic Leadership Program boosted my confidence. The program provided me with the tools and experience to truly believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
— Jacinta Lewis

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

While I can't pinpoint a single moment that sparked volunteering in others, I believe my consistent enthusiasm and willingness to share my experiences within the program have encouraged others to join me. By being vocal and active, I've created a space where volunteering feels inviting and rewarding.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

Well….Atlanta isn't just a city; it's my home. My family's roots run deep here, and my life has been built within these vibrant neighborhoods. It's this deep connection that compels me to serve the community that has given me so much. But Atlanta is more than just a familiar place. It's a city brimming with energy and soul. The people here are unlike any others in the US, with a warmth and welcoming spirit that makes you feel instantly connected. There's always something to discover, I enjoy the thriving art scene to the pulsating music venues. It's a city that's constantly alive, and I want to be a part of the positive force that shapes its future. By serving my community, I get to contribute to the city that has nurtured me. It's a chance to give back to the place I call home and help ensure it continues to be a vibrant and welcoming place for generations to come.

Which Nonprofit Organization(s) do you volunteer with?

Piedmont Park Conservancy

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

Food insecurity and housing affordability are the two issues that stand out to me, because of their depth and breadth across neighborhoods across Atlanta.

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

I love Piedmont Park because it is a massive, beautiful public space where one can find Atlanta residents from all over the city. I volunteer my time doing clean up work and landscaping to maintain its beauty and hopefully keep people coming back!

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

I have met great people from all over the world while volunteering at the Park. I find myself having diverse conversations that enrich my perspective and keep me curious.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

I am now a seasoned operator of a Carryall with Dump Bed! Also my landscaping and general communication skills have leveled up during my time volunteering.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

One morning I borrowed a pressure washer from the local Home Depot and spent the day enhancing the area around the clubhouse. There's something very satisfying about power washing and seeing others enjoy your work afterward!

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

Atlanta is a special place and its people have impacted the world in so many ways. Its diversity in people, ecosystems, and industry is second to none, and I think people are proud to call Atlanta home. From civil rights to music to sports to food to lots of other areas, Atlanta has truly influenced everything.
