Which Nonprofit Organization(s) do you volunteer with?

Police Athletic League and Hands on Atlanta

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

Atlanta has many pressing needs, from homeless to working with youths and seniors. It's hard to focus on just one.

Hands-on Atlanta gives you many different organizations to work with on various issues. I like trying different organizations and groups.
— Jeff Cantin

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Seeing the impact or the results of your work is empowering. I still drive by the Habitat for Humanity houses that I helped to build for a family.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

Communicating with different groups with different views but wanting to work towards the same goal.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

Returning to the Habitat for Humanity building, it was motivating to meet the family and work side by side with them as they moved into the house. The family's appreciation is motivating, especially after learning about their struggle to get to this point.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

The Atlanta metro area offers everything from walking the Beltline to climbing Stone Mountain. I love the outdoor activities in the area.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

Try different activities until you find something you like. Hands-on Atlanta does give you a wide range of activities to try.

Volunteering in May? Share where, when and if others can join you or how they can get involved.

Now is the time to learn about gardening and working in community greenspaces. The Wylde Center has many openings across the metro.

Nastassja Cockrell: Following her purpose through giving back

Meet Nastassja Cockrell, a fellow in our Civic Leadership Program whose passion has always been protecting the most vulnerable populations. She actively volunteers with Grl Give, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta. In addition to volunteering she serves as the Vice President of the Sugarloaf Chapter of Grls ATL.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

I care the most about food insecurity. I have been a social worker for almost 20 years. Children not having enough food is something that we can easily tackle. It is really hard to focus on school or any other task if you are hungry. Food insecurity is something we can and must solve for our children and communities.

I’m committed to doing this work and together we can continue doing good!!! If I can be of assistance of help out please let me know! Separate we can do somethings but together we can do ALL things!!
— Nastassja Cockrell

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

I love volunteering with Grls Give. It’s the outreach component of my social club Grls ATL. We love getting together and serving the people. I volunteer with them because we share the same passion and heart to help others.

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Volunteering has truly given my life purpose. I live by the motto blessed to be a blessing. If God has helped me then it’s my duty to bless someone else.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

I have learned project management skills and also communication skills.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

This year at Parklane, I organized a spaghetti lunch. The kids were so grateful and there was no leftovers. The next week one of the kids asked if I could bring some fried chicken. I thought it was so funny.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

I absolutely love Atlanta. There is no place like Atlanta. I love the festivals, the culture, and the food. My favorite thing to do is go to brunch. There is nothing like a good brunch.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

My advice would be to be consistent and start where you can. Most people think that they don’t have enough time to volunteer but even just once a month can be impactful.

Volunteering in April? Share where, when and if others can join you or how they can get involved.

I’ll be at Parklane and also Atlanta Unbound Academy on April 27 for their Stomp the Yard event. Definitely go to GrlsGive.org to check is out and our April/May events.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

Atlanta is an amazing city, but it also faces some challenges that I care deeply about. One of the most important is ensuring all children have access to high-quality early childhood education. A strong foundation in these early years sets kids up for success in school and life. Unfortunately, not all Atlanta children have this opportunity, and that can lead to achievement gaps later on. These gaps can then become a cycle of poverty, something we all want to break. Another pressing need is affordable living. The cost of living in Atlanta, especially housing, is rising much faster than wages for many residents. This makes it hard for families, young professionals, and even seniors to find safe and stable places to live. When housing costs are too high, it puts a strain on everyone's resources, increases homelessness, and creates a feeling of instability in our communities. Finally, drug abuse is a serious problem in Atlanta, with opioids and other substances having a devastating impact on individuals, families, and entire neighborhoods. It leads to crime, health problems, and lost productivity. To address this issue, we need a multi-pronged approach that includes prevention programs, effective treatment options, and strong support systems for recovery. These are just a few of the areas I'm passionate about seeing progress in Atlanta. Each of these issues has a ripple effect, impacting the overall well-being of our city's residents. By working together, we can create a brighter future for everyone in Atlanta.

I’m currently volunteering with Discovery, an Atlanta-based program that empowers K-5 students in Title 1 schools. We run engaging enrichment sessions on alternate Saturdays, focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math), social-emotional learning (SEL), and health and wellness activities. It’s a fun and rewarding experience for the kids, as they get to learn new things, connect with their peers, and unleash their creativity. We even provide them with healthy snacks to keep them fueled up throughout the day!
— Edgar-Keiron

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

What I truly enjoy about volunteering with Hands On Atlanta is the authentic leadership and the incredible ripple effect our work has on the community. The leaders are passionate individuals who are genuinely invested in the cause, not just checking boxes. They inspire us to bring our own ideas to the table and empower us to make a real difference. Secondly, the organization provides an amazing platform to get involved and network. There are so many diverse opportunities to contribute, whether it's getting involved in civic engagement, working on environmental conditions, or leading the Discovery program. It allows you to connect with like-minded people from all walks of life, all working towards a common goal. The network you build can be incredibly valuable, both personally and professionally. But most importantly, I volunteer with Hands on Atlanta because of the tangible impact we have. Seeing the positive change we create is incredibly rewarding. It motivates me to keep coming back and give my all, knowing that our efforts are truly making a difference in people's lives. Overall, volunteering with HOA is an enriching experience that allows me to learn, grow, and contribute to something larger than myself.

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

Volunteering has been a game-changer for me, both personally and professionally. It's given my life a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment that extends far beyond the daily grind. On a personal level, volunteering connects me to my community in a meaningful way. Seeing the positive impact I can have on others, even in small ways, is incredibly rewarding. It's fostered a sense of compassion and understanding that I carry with me in all aspects of my life. Professionally, volunteering has been a fantastic way to develop new skills and step outside my comfort zone. It's allowed me to lead projects, hone my communication abilities, and learn from inspiring individuals. These experiences have boosted my confidence and made me a more well-rounded professional. Overall, volunteering has been an enriching experience that's allowed me to grow as a person and contribute to something larger than myself. It's a fantastic way to meet like-minded individuals, develop valuable skills, and create a positive impact on the world around you.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

Leading the Discover Child Enrichment program has been an enriching journey of self-discovery and skill development. The ability to delegate has been an essential skill, throughout this process I've learned to assess a volunteer's skills and interests, assigning tasks that challenge them and allow them to shine. This not only lightens my workload but also keeps volunteers engaged and feeling valued. The needs of our young participants are constantly evolving, and so must the program. I actively seek feedback from volunteers, parents, and the children themselves to identify areas for improvement. Finally, working with children requires adaptability! As a former educator, I’ve become very proficient at thinking on my feet and adjusting activities or schedules as needed to ensure a positive and enriching experience for everyone. Beyond these specific skills, volunteering has instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility and a commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of Atlanta's youth.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

Seeing the enjoyment on the faces of the children, volunteers and parents is what really motivated me. You’re getting a chance to get on-the-spot feedback and to know that so many people had so much appreciation and positivity towards the program is beautiful. In addition to that having an opportunity to bond, build relationships, encourage, and give knowledge is amazing.

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

There is no place like “the city”, Atlanta is a place in which you can do or be anything, it is surrounded by opportunity if you go out and find it. I enjoy all things Atlanta from Piedmont Park, EAV, urban hiking through Midtown, Music Festivals, Live Music on patios, the Beltline, Waffle House, and of course the weather. As one of the most populated African American cities in the US with a rich civil rights history, it's incredibly inspiring to see so many successful Black leaders and entrepreneurs shaping the future, in addition to several other cultures and communities co-existing. The "City" is truly special and unique.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

In my experience, the biggest hurdle to volunteering is often ourselves! We can get caught up in waiting for the "perfect" opportunity, the "right" teammates, or that elusive "free Saturday." My advice? Don't wait! Pull up – there are so many causes that need your help. Even a few hours a week can make a real difference. Personally, volunteering has been incredibly rewarding. It connects you to a community of passionate people, gives you a chance to learn new skills, and provides a deep sense of fulfillment knowing you're making a positive impact. It's a win-win! So, if you're thinking about volunteering, don't overthink it. Just start exploring – there are tons of online resources that can help you find an opportunity that aligns with your interests. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Volunteering in April? Share where, when and if others can join you or how they can get involved.

You can find me May 7th at the COX Communications campus (6205-B Peachtree Dunwoody Rd, Atlanta, GA 30328) working with 250 volunteers packing up STEAM Kit Packs, reach out to me anytime and I’m sure I can connect you with an opportunity to get involved.

Please list anything else you think our community should know about you, your volunteer service, or your commitment to Do Something Good!

In addition to my passion for volunteering with HOA, I have several ideas to expand Atlanta's social impact landscape! Here are three initiatives I'm particularly excited about, and where I'd love your assistance: Yoga in Schools: Imagine dispatching certified yoga teachers to Title 1 schools, promoting mindfulness and stress reduction for students. Research shows yoga can improve focus, emotional regulation, and overall well-being. Partnering with schools and yoga studios could make this a reality, and I'd love to collaborate on building this program. Tech & Entrepreneurial Saturdays: Equipping students with the skills to thrive in the digital age is crucial. A Saturday enrichment program focusing on tech basics, coding fundamentals, and even fostering an entrepreneurial mindset would be a game-changer. This could involve recruiting volunteers with tech expertise to create engaging workshops, and it would be fantastic to have your support in getting this off the ground. Pay-What-You-Can Consulting: Many small businesses in Atlanta lack access to affordable consulting services. My aim is to connect them with marketing, finance, or operations professionals who can offer guidance. This initiative could leverage the expertise within our community to empower local businesses. These are just a few ideas, and I'm always brainstorming ways to make Atlanta a more vibrant and equitable city. My commitment to "Do Something Good" is unwavering, and I believe in the power of collaboration. If any of these initiatives resonate with you, or if you have ideas of your own, let's connect and see what kind of positive impact we can make together!

Meet Crystal Mccorkle, a young professional dedicated to empowering others and serving her community. She is a creative, zealous, and fun-loving volunteer, a fellow in our Civic Leadership Program, and a Client Service Consultant. (Volunteer with Girl Scouts here)

Get to know Crystal and how her volunteering journey has impacted her path forward!

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

As a civic leader with a servant heart, it can be difficult to identify what I care mostly about. However, after working side by side with Girl Scouts for the past 8 months, I have a renewed passion for children (specifically girls) and their well-being, confidence, and development of their character.

More than anything, I’m a community advocate with a passion for connecting resources with opportunity. My intent and dedication is unwavering.
— Crystal Mccorkle

What do you love most about an organization you volunteer with? Why do you volunteer with them?

I have absolutely LOVED volunteering with Girl Scouts. The many opportunities and programs they make available for girls to develop is amazing. It not only provides different ways for our community daughters to grow and learn, but it provides variety for volunteers. The Girl Scouts staff also makes volunteering easy by keeping activities so organized!

How has volunteering impacted your personal/professional life?

I have volunteered for as long as I can remember. Volunteering has helped me in so many ways, from conquering personal goals of pursuing more meaningful and deeper community engagement to professional goals of expanding my network and advocating for change in the fintech industry.

What skills have you honed or what have you learned through your experience as a volunteer?

My current goal is to hone my storytelling and public speaking skills. Volunteering has shown me that my story is unique and telling it is important. It has given me several opportunities to practice and hone these skills. It’s certainly the gift that keeps on giving.

Can you share a memorable highlight or moment you've experienced that might motivate others to volunteer?

Annually, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta has an event called Cookie Rally. This event is the one stop shop for girl scouts to come and gain all the knowledge and hone their skills ahead of cookie selling season. Well, I was very nervous to volunteer. The fear of misguiding a young girl was almost paralyzing. However, I was committed to the cause and decided to do it anyway. That entire experience was so rewarding. Seeing the girls range from being extremely nervous to super confident, and everything in between, it allowed me to get out of my own way and focus on them. By the end of it, I was role playing different costumes types with the girls! LOL

Why Atlanta? What do you love about this city and/or tell us a bit about some of your favorite Atlanta things - people, places, things to do, etc.

I’m a GA native - from Columbus - Atlanta has always been “the big city”. When I graduated college (shoutout to THE Fort Valley State University), I couldn’t wait to move to Atlanta. I’ve been able to call Atlanta home for over 15 years and I love it! The food scene to the music scene keeps my friends and I entertained and busy.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting involved with volunteering?

Just do it! Don’t over think it…just do it! Find something or an organization that piques your interest and start there. Hands on Atlanta is a terrific resource to help.

What impact areas or pressing needs facing Atlanta do you care about most? Why?

Several impact areas and pressing needs facing Atlanta are of particular importance to me due to their potential to effect positive change and improve the overall well-being of the community. Here are some key areas I care about the most:

Education Equity: Ensuring access to quality education for all residents, regardless of socioeconomic background, is crucial for Atlanta's future prosperity. By addressing disparities in educational opportunities, we can empower individuals to reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

Poverty Alleviation: Tackling poverty and homelessness is essential for building a more inclusive and equitable Atlanta. By providing support services, affordable housing, and pathways to economic stability, we can uplift marginalized communities and create a more just society.

Community Development: Promoting sustainable community development initiatives, including affordable housing, infrastructure improvements, and access to healthcare, fosters a thriving and resilient Atlanta. By investing in local neighborhoods and empowering residents, we can enhance the overall quality of life for all Atlantans.

Additionally, JLD provides a supportive and inclusive environment where women from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, serve, and lead. The friendships and connections I've made through JLD are invaluable, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a dynamic and impactful organization. Overall, volunteering with JLD allows me to combine my passions with purpose, and I'm proud to be part of a community-driven organization that is making a difference in the lives of others.

After volunteering for 9 months, you build a bond with the students and the parents that makes you want to continue to volunteer with the program. It truly makes you feel like you are doing something good in the community. Atlanta holds a special place in my heart because I am a true native. One of the things I love most about this city is its vibrant and diverse culture. Atlanta is a melting pot of people from all walks of life, bringing together a rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and perspectives. One of my favorite things about Atlanta is its thriving sports, arts, and music scene. From the High Museum of Art to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to Broadway at Fox Theatre to the Atlanta Falcons to the Atlanta Braves to the Atlanta Hawks, there's no shortage of opportunities to experience world-class sports, arts, and music right here in the city. I also love exploring the local music festival One Musicfest and the Jazz Festival. But perhaps what I love most about Atlanta is its sense of community. Introducing the 2020 Class of Civic Fellows

clp pic 2.JPG

Hands On Atlanta is thrilled to announce the 11th Class of Civic Fellows! 28 dynamic changemakers were recently accepted into our Civic Leadership Program! Over the next 12 months, this class of Fellows will manage service projects at designated nonprofit partner sites by recruiting, engaging, and teaching volunteers about the critical issue; their service project is addressing. The Fellows will be guided by Hands On Atlanta staff who will provide training in volunteer and project management, leadership, and fundraising. We added a new component this year: mentoring. This exciting initiative pairs a current class member with a graduate of the program to further aid in the Fellow’s development as a community leader.

Not only will Fellows learn the importance of direct service in mitigating inequities in the community, but they will also learn the role fundraising plays in sustaining a nonprofit’s ability to provide those critical services. By the end of their year of service, the Civic Fellows will transition to Civic Leaders, having sharpened their skills in issue education, problem-solving, public speaking, and team building.

“I have a strong passion for serving my community, as well as community development in underprivileged communities. I look forward to learning and growing within this program.” - Kassidy Jackson

The Hands On Atlanta Civic Fellows represent the outstanding volunteers of our organization. These are the leaders that exceed their level of service to reach and inspire communities within Metro Atlanta! Please help us welcome the incoming class!
