Education Programs

The quest of the Education Programs Team at Hands On Atlanta is to improve educational outcomes and directly confront systemic injustice for students and families across metro Atlanta. We aim to be the premier team tackling educational inequities for children from birth to 12th grade in partnership with our local institutions and organizations.

During SY24, three key programs anchoredHands On Atlanta's education portfolio and impacted more than 12,000 students across metro Atlanta: AmeriCorps, Discovery, and Meals4Kids. As an organization, we are proud of our results, but we understand there are many miles to go before our students and families have the quality of life they deserve.

WEEKEND ENRICHMENT

Discovery, the longest-running program in our portfolio, supported 467 K-5 students across 10 schools in 3 districts. Each site had a Hands On Atlanta Civic Fellow serving as school captain with the support of 1,950 additional volunteers.

POWER LEARNING

Our AmeriCorps members had a tremendous impact across metro Atlanta schools during SY24. Serving a full 10-month service term, members contributed to our students' academic and social-emotional growth throughout the school year. Members served K-12students as ELA/math tutors and social-emotional learning coaches. We were excited to expand our footprint into DeKalb CountySchools to help The Anchor School in their inaugural year, and we look forward to continued expansion into other districts beginning in SY25.

COMMUNITY + Civic ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS

Our Community + Civic Engagement team provides programming and capacity-building resources to 150 of the most effective and impactful nonprofits in the Atlanta community, who are focused primarily on food security, educational equity, and environmental sustainability. The resources range from powering their impact via volunteer recruitment, to placing leadership volunteers (our Civic Fellows) with nonprofits who act as host sites, to providing high quality trainings & trend reports on volunteer engagement – plus, tons more.

In FY24, we launched a Steering Committee of 10 nonprofits, providing input & insights in our programming to ensure it’s truly driven by those who benefit from it. We also brought on 17 new partners, retaining 87% of our partnership base from FY23. In addition to these wins, we grew our Civic Leadership Program by 50% and significantly moved the needle in our core impact areas.
